WHAT IS APPRENTICESHIP?

  • DEFINITION: ap.pren.tice n. Abbr. app. 1. One who is learning a trade or occupation, especially as a member of a labor union. 3. A beginner;a learner. --attributive. 1. Often used to modify another noun: an apprentice electrician; an apprentice sailor. --ap.pren.tice tr.v. ap.pren.ticed, ap.pren.ticing, ap.pren.tic.es. To place or take on as a beginner or learner.

    Apprenticeship is a combination of On The Job and Classroom training. Apprentices attend school two nights per week during the spring and fall semesters. Apprentices work during the day at training assignments with electrical contractors. The contractor pays the apprentice weekly.


WHAT IS AN ELECTRICAL CONSTRUCTION APPRENTICE?

An Electrical Construction Apprentice is an individual who electrically wires single family homes, duplexes, commercial buildings, high rises, hospitals, schools, factories, industries, and electrical generation plants under the supervision of a journeymen electrician.

WHAT IS THE APPRENTICES JOB REALLY ABOUT?

Electrical Maintenance, new construction, and repair the mental and physical skills that you acquire with proper training programs for the entire range of work performed.

An electrical construction apprentices career involves many types of jobs, jobs that require your hands as well as your mind.

YOUR HANDS AND YOUR MIND?

Bringing power to a building requires digging trenches, laying conduit, pulling wire, setting panels and installing branch circuits that feed the light fixtures and machinery.

Equipment and machinery that requires you to perform diagnostic evaluation to determine the correct wiring configuration, and termination's.

Maintenance or service jobs, here you are the trouble shooter using test equipment to determine the problem, your skills in logic and reasoning are tested.

WHERE DOES THE ELECTRICAL APPRENTICE WORK?

Our new construction jobs, maintenance, or service trucks, the apprentice will learn how to read blue prints, order material, keep track of their On the Job Training hours, fill out time cards, and progress reports. In many cases the apprentice will be dealing with the public and how they present themselves and communicate, with people and their personalities is essential to an apprentices performance.

WHAT'S THE FUTURE IN THE ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY?

Well trained dependable and motivated apprentices have a bright future, the world is dependent on electricity. Realizing that computerization and constant change in technology electricians have a prosperous, bright future.

SIZE 4 HAT, SIZE TWENTY NECK COULD NOT MAKE IT IN COLLEGE?

TO THE CONTRARY!

Not everyone is college orientated and with Eight thousand hours of on the job training and over One thousand hours of in class study the apprentices will earn Fifty credits towards a degree.

PREPARING FOR A CARRER AS AN ELECTRICIAN APPRENTICE

You will need strong reading, communication and mathematics skills. Certain Physical abilities and have basic work place characteristics.

READING:

Apprentices will be required to learn to understand highly technical material, electrical theory and the use of plans, blue prints, and specifications. Apprentices are expected to read and comprehend:

  • Safety Rules
  • Instruction in use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Code Books, Diagrams, Charts and Graphs.


COMMUNICATION:

The Apprentice will be working with journeymen electricians and other construction crafts. They must have the ability to;

  • Understand verbal instruction and warnings.
  • Communicate orally with others.
  • Comminicate in writing


MATHEMATICS:

The electrical apprentice skill in mathematics is imperative, you will compute electrical loads, bills, calculate conduit bends.

  • Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying and Dividing using a variety of formulas involving whole numbers; ratios; and percentages.
  • Converting units, square units, and metric units.
  • Performing direct measurements of objects and distances.
  • Utilizing algebra, calculating degrees and angles, computing area and volume.


PHYSICAL ABILITY:

Apprentices are required to perform duties such as lifting, carrying and installing equipment and fixtures, work tools, wires and cables which are color coded. The apprentice should be able to:

  • Identify colors correctly
  • Hear warning signals
  • Maintain balance and perform construction activities while on a ladder
  • Operate two handed power tools
  • Lift and carry 50 pound objects


ATTITUDE:

As an apprentice you will need to be;

  • Self motivated, responsible and dependable
  • Work in a team environment
  • Remain calm in emergency situations
  • Plan and organize tasks, meet deadlines
  • Maintain good working relationships with others in a work setting


WHAT IS "ON THE JOB TRAINING"?

In today's Electrical Apprenticeship program, the electrical apprentice may be assigned to many different Electrical Contractors. These contractors will place the apprentice with Journeyman electrician to work with and learn job skills and safe installations.

WHAT ARE THE WAGES LIKE?

An Apprentice's wages are governed by the California Apprenticeship Standards and Local Union Agreement.


Ventura County Electrical Apprentice starting wage is $9.60 plus benefits and receive wage increases every six months after a thousand hours of On the Job Training with passing grade, for the first year. Once a year there after with fifteen hundred hours of On the Job Training and passing grades.

HOW LONG IS THE ELECTRICAL APPRENTICESHIP?

The Ventura County Electrical Apprenticeship is a five year program.

CAN I GET COLLEGE CREDIT?

Absolutely! Ventura County Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training classes are credited through the American Council on Education. Many apprentices complete their apprenticeship and further their general education requirements and obtain their "Associate of Science" or "Bachelor of Science" degree's and in a few cases continued on for "Electrical Engineering" degrees.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

Nothing! the First Year, and only your books every year there after.

CAN I GET VETERANS BENEFITS?


YES! The Ventura County Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program is approved for Veterans Administration benefits. Upon acceptance to the apprenticeship program, we will assist you with the required forms for VA.

WHAT ARE THE
QUALIFICATIONS?

  • Minimum of Eighteen years of age.


  • High School Graduate or equivalent G.E.D. and have completed one year of High School Algebra with a passing grade or better or, one semester of College Algebra with a passing grade.


  • High School or G.E.D. transcripts, Diploma with official seal, Birth Certificate and Drivers License or passport with picture on it.


  • Applicant must be capable of performing the tasks required of an apprentice on the job and classroom.


  • Applicant should have reliable transportation due to various locations of the job sites through out the country.



HOW DO I APPLY

  • Document your qualifications as shown.

  • Call for an appintment once you have all the required documents together 805-642-4450.

  • You are required to take math an mechanical aptitude entrance exams.

  • Be interviewed. Interviews will be scheduled for applicants who pass the aptitude examination. Exact dates and times of individual interviews shall be determined by the number of interviews to be conducted and are subject to change. Applicants will be notified of their status by mail within four weeks. Interview results are never available by telephone.

  • Attend apprentice orientation. Applicants who have passed the interview will be notified by registered mail to appear for an orientation meeting as their names are reached on the list. Orientation normally takes about four (4) hours.

WHEN SELECTED, WHEN WILL I GO TO WORK?

The Ventura County Electrical JATP places new students to work as soon as possible after orientation. Students are asked to keep their current jobs until they are notified to quit.
